Deb Jensen of the Catalina Island Conservancy explains that Ironwood trees (such as the one shown here) are one of a handful of native species left on Catalina Island. The proliferation of feral goats and pigs, as well as myriad other non-native plants and animals, have virtually supplanted the island's original ecosystem.
