10:15 a.m.: We pull into Avalon harbor, Catalina Island. Virtually all of the island's residents live in this one-square mile community. Although the island is a popular tourist destination (thanks as much to a thriving casino as well as to its natural beauty), very few people ever venture beyond the boundaries of Avalon into "the interior." All vehicles must be ferried in, so electric golf carts abound in Avalon.
