We travel by bus into "the interior," as all of the island beyond the community of Avalon is known. The road was rough and twisting, lined for much of the way by eucalyptus trees planted by the Wrigley family (which once owned the island). On the way, Deb Jensen, director of education for the Catalina Island Conservancy, explained the history and ecology of the island and answered journalists' questions.
